Window 8

With its simple intersecting tracery, this window would appear very plain were it not for the decoration placed on the surface of the tracery bars.

A popular motif in the first quarter of the 14th century, the ballflower consists of three 'petals' enclosing a 'bud'. On this window ballflower is present in profusion - some might say, to excess - inside as well as out.

Not only the tracery bars but also the length of the mullions and two lines of outer mouldings are studded with these stylised buds. There are some 450 of them on the outside (a few are missing from the outer layer) and a similar number inside the church.
